Traditionally a pipeline gas distributor, it has started booking LNG capacity — supercooled gas arriving on tankers — at existing landing terminals acround Europe.
It is also involved in building new regasification facilities and studying some other projects for possible construction at future dates.
The company is working on sourcing LNG from various geographic sources to add to its upstream gas exploration.
The table lists details, which E.ON Ruhrgas issued during a press trip to a Spanish LNG landing terminal, which it already uses to distribute LNG via its Spanish unit.
LNG LANDING TERMINALS
1) Existing regasification facilities, where Ruhrgas has made firm bookings
- Barcelona, Spain - 800,000 million cubic metres (cbm) per annum for 15 years since 2007 to be received at Enagas terminal
- Huelva, Spain - 800,000 million cbm to be received for 15 years p.a. from 2009
2) Under construction, with fixed Ruhrgas bookings made
- Isle of Grain, UK, phase III - 1.7 billion cbm/p.a. from 2010
- GATE, Netherlands - 3.0 billion cbm/p-a. from 2011
- Livorno, offshore Tuscay, Italy (OLT) - 1.5-1.9 billion cbm/p.a. from 2011
3) Futures projects under evaluation, not confirmed
- Krk, Croatia, Adria LNG - 10-15 billion cbm/p.a. from 2014, remains option
- Wilhelmshaven, Germany, DFTG - 10.7 billion cbm/p.a. possibly after 2014, but remains option
- Trieste, Italy, Alpi Adriatico - 8 billion cbm/p.a. after 2014, approval expected in 2009
LNG SOURCING
Ruhrgas aims to contract 10-15 billion cmb/p.a. of LNG in the medium term, predominantly in the Atlantic basin and from the Middle East:
